SeaWorld opened in (insert year) and has had four locations- three currently- in its run. There was SeaWorld Ohio, SeaWorld San Diego, SeaWorld San Antonio, and SeaWorld Orlando. In recent years, former trainers such as Sam Berg and Jeff Ventre have spoken out against the techniques used at SeaWorld and revealed quite a few alarming facts such as the medication their Orcas are constantly on, their breeding and raising program, and enclosure size. Not to mention the death rate of their Orcas. In the world, the most notorious killer Whale is named Tilikum-SeaWorld owns him and breeds him as much as they can.
In 1983, at the tender age of two, Tilikum was taken from his family off the coast of Iceland. He would be brought to a small on its last run aquarium called Sealand of the Pacific in British Columbia. Here, he would be placed with two other Orcas. Two older Females named Haida II and Nootka IV. These two females would constantly bully him and hurt him. At night the Orcas would be placed in what was called a module. It was basically a floating steel box that the Orcas were cramped into to assure that no kind human or the like could cut them free once the trainers and owners had gone home for the night. A past trainer (Blackfish) has remarked that in the morning, Tilikum would come out covered in racks. Racks are teeth against Skin. Not to mention that when the females went into heat, Tilikum didn’t have much of choice if he wanted to breed with them or not.
A few years after he was taken to Sealand of the pacific, a young trainer named Keltie Bearns slipped into the Orca’s enclosure. It is not known exactly why but Tilikum would kill Ms.Bearns. It is possible that his two female companions helped him, it’s possible that Tilikum was bored and thought it was a game, it’s possible that this was Tilikum’s way of striking back at the species who had taken him from his family.
Around this time, SeaWorld was looking for a male to breed. They had 13 whales at the time and 12 of them were female. They had two chooses- an Orca named Keiko in Mexico City or Tilikum. They chose Tilikum. Keiko’s fate lie somewhere else. (To learn more about Keiko see his page). Tilikum was bought –albeit after a legal battle over whether or not it was a good idea to take this orca as he was a killer - and taken to SeaWorld Orlando where he still is today.
Later in 1999, a likely deranged ex-criminal from South Carolina broke into SeaWorld at night, the details are surprisingly unknown or SeaWorld doesn’t want them to be known, and tried to swim with Tilikum. They found the young man dead the next morning.
It is surprising no one saw this considering the huge number of cameras, security guards, night trainers, and vets that SeaWorld has on standby.
It was almost twenty years to the day of Keltie Bearns death that Tilikum killed again.
He would end the life of one of SeaWorld’s best trainers –so called that from previous coworkers- a young woman named Dawn Brancheau. After the attack, SeaWorld tried to blame the entire thing on Ms.Brancheau by saying she shouldn’t have had her hair in a ponytail, it should have been in a bun.
Please note, that if someone looked at any other show that day or previous the female trainers had their hair up in the exact same way.
Today SeaWorld has about 7 orcas in Orcas in their care at the Orlando Park, with three of them being born in captivity. They have had mothers who have lost their babies due the baby being stillborn or miscarried. There have been cases of incest breeding between the orcas and a mother has rejected her calf because of that.
When a mother rejects her calf it means she is allowing it to die.
In SeaWorld’s history, they have been associated with multiple injuries and deaths- some human and some Orca.
For example, in their enclosures, Orcas get pretty bored- pretty restless. They often fight. During such a fight, one of the females, named Kandu accidently cracked her jaw which cut open an artery. She bleeds to death.
This is only a few of the terrible things SeaWorld has done with their captive orcas- there are many more and goodness only knows what hasn’t been released to the public.
